  • no more

    heart aches
    soul cringes
    anger rises
    reality hinges
    on the complicated death
    of simple lives
    praying
    for blessing
    for healing
    for salvation
    kneeling
    and falling
    into a deep despair
    for a country dividing
    so deeply
    cleverly inviting
    prejudice
    into our homes
    It's time to shut
    and lock the door
    to hatred bred
    in neighborhoods
    in schools
    in government
    in pools of fetid waste
    left by an ignorant society
    waving flags
    brandishing guns
to show the world the reality
of how a society is undone
    by letting anger
    rule the heart
    and soul of a nation
  • dad vows

    I promise
to lovingly hold you until you can crawl,
crawl patiently with you until you can walk,
walk peacefully with you until you run,
joyfully run with you as long as I can.
And when I can no longer keep up,
I'll still run, walk or even crawl to you
if you need me to hold you again.
  • a clear signal

lines of discrimination are drawn in wet cement
even with years of withering storms
    they refuse to be obscured
paving over, covering up, burying them
    will leave them lurking underneath
    waiting to resurface with time
only a purposeful upheaval, a deconstruction
of the hardened structures will break
    the lines into smaller pieces
dots and dashes on broken segments
    signaling to the coming generations
a kind of S.O.S. from the past
  • your only tool

violence has become a way of life
guns, bombs, knives, swords - words
infamy and anonymity are pendulum swings
    unstable minds choose a weapon
yelling at an unseen foe on a street corner
shooting unknown enemies in a school
"when your only tool is a hammer,
everything will look like a nail"*
calming a soul troubled in mental storms
a nation needs to care to prevent
  • drought haiku

    I'm not all that spry
But I can still kick your ass
    Get off my dead lawn!
