  • kids in cages

    There are no words,
Heavenly or earthly
That can justify
The inhumanity
We are seeing today.
Pulling the children
From Mother’s arms,
From Father’s care,
To put them in cages
Is not following law.
It’s swallowing justice.
It’s wallowing in racism.
It’s the hollowing out
Of values that separate
Democracy from fascism.
No words can cure
These abhorrent acts.
Only action will work
Against the onslaught
Of our core beliefs.
When will this
Be the last straw
To make us all act
To make us all fight
To make us all vote.

  • the naked king

    Standing on hallowed ground
Defending his presidenthood
The size of his crowd
Quality of his choices
And his bigly intellect
Attacking detractors
With alternative facts
And grade school bravado
As millions marched in protest
Day one of 1,461
One day at a time
One day at a time
Breathe

  • no more

    heart aches
soul cringes
anger rises
reality hinges
on the complicated death
of simple lives
praying
for blessing
for healing
for salvation
kneeling 
and falling
into a deep despair
for a country dividing
so deeply
cleverly inviting
prejudice 
into our homes
It's time to shut
and lock the door
to hatred bred
in neighborhoods
in schools
in government
in pools of fetid waste
left by an ignorant society
waving flags
brandishing guns
to show the world the reality
of how a society is undone
by letting anger
rule the heart
and soul of a nation

  • breathe

    Take a deep breath.
Let it out.
In that time,
A child in this world
Died from hunger.

Breathe deep.
Exhale slowly.
In that time,
Americans threw out
Five tons of food.

Like a colossal Grand Canyon,
The gap between
Rich and poor
Takes my breath away.

  • pillars of strength

    The two most powerful forces brought to bear
on everything sentient living in our world
and beyond are love and freedom.

Love has no boundaries and is beyond compare
in the cycle of life as it drives both the willing
and unwilling to move forward.

Freedom is always bound by love and there
is little one can do to escape the bonds
but to grow stronger with them.

For when combined, freedom and love share
a power that nothing in the universe could
possibly withstand for long.

To experience the two, no matter how brief or rare
in a lifetime, is to know with certainty
that a life is worth living.
