  • making waves

    Concentric rings,
    ever expanding
    finally reaching
    distant shorelines,
    making small
    changes.
    Of this one thing
    I am utterly certain:
    in this sea of humanity,
    my single drop of life
    and yours
    matter.
  • greeting the day

I can see my breath in the cool stillness of the morning. As my best four-legged friend and I head from tree to bush to patch of drying grass, I revel in the quiet sounds of a morning walk.
A dog that barks forlornly as we walk by.
The whisper of hummingbird wings going from flower to flower.
A cry of a early rising hawk as it seeks the warmth of first light.
The rustling of leaves in the brisk yet gentle breeze.
I can feel my muscles loosen as I climb the gentle slope leading to the park.
I can feel my mind open as I take in the breathtaking panorama before me.
A tree full of red ornament-like pomegranates.
The newborn colors of a sunrise as they stroll across the sky.
A splash of autumn foliage rarely seen in California.
The bright clothes of children waiting for a yellow bus.
I know that without the distractions of the coming day,the universe will match me
stride for stride and teach me things I can only learn when I listen closely.
A sense of belonging with knowing my place in the world.
The contentment of a quiet moment alone.
A true conversation with the person I want to be.
The wisdom of nature guiding my thoughts.
These and so much more I seek and most often find on my quiet morning walk.
  • enough

    Enough food
    Enough house
    Enough home
    Enough hope

    Enough work
    Enough play
    Enough rest
    Enough peace
    Enough known
    Enough kith
    Enough kin
    Enough love

    Enough talk
    Enough tears
Enough pain, enough strain, enough sores
    Enough done?

Enough kids, enough death, enough camps, enough pills
Enough drought, enough spills, enough doubt, enough fear, enough dross
Enough eyes, enough loss, enough news, enough war, enough lies, enough dead, enough dread
    Enough help?

Enough cries, enough pleas, enough prayers
    Enough spin, enough God
    Enough you?
    Enough me?

    Enough
  • lucky

May love be your constant companion
On this day of lucky milieu
May you share your love with your friends
And those less lucky than you
May you feel this love like no other
And hear the music it brings
For when there is love for no reason but love
    Even unlucky hearts can sing
  • an open window

After 50 years of evangelical prison
    and two years of freedom
    I can finally see
    the sun warms my face
    No more supposed to's
    and guilty penance
    for wrongs done
in my life and somehow before
    Religion is the filthy rag
    trying to wipe clean
    a clear window
    leaving streaks of confusion
    Doing right, because it's right
    doing good, because it's good
    being love, because of love
we don't need sermons or books to tell us this
    We can all see
    theology won't help you
religion won't make it more clear
just open the window and crawl through
